An interesting report has been published with a high number of drivers in their over 50s stating that they don’t think they would pass the practical driving test if they were to sit one today.
Infact the report has shown that over 2 million of older drivers don’t think that they are fit to drive.
The very frank report was carried out by insurance company Rias who asked older drivers to honestly assess their own driving abilities.
These new figures have come at a time when the DVSA is piloting a new practical test where the independent driving portion is raised from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. It also includes a portion of the student driver following directions from satellite navigation rather than spoken directions from the examiner.
However, despite these responses given by older motorists, 70% of their number believe that a person should be allowed to continue driving into old age without a re test or even a refresher course.
Currently, the UK does not require an older driver to take any further driving tests or refresher courses.
It was reported that modern driving conditions are off putting to many older drivers. It showed that many of them would avoid driving at peak times, bank holidays and school holiday periods.
The older drivers interviewed stated that they would be reluctant to stop driving altogether as it would impact upon their independence and social lives.
However, it was also noted that only around half to those drivers interviewed would stop driving if their doctor told them that they were no longer capable of doing so.
