It can now been reported that after a week long trial Sir Harry Djanogly has been acquitted of dangerous driving and assault.
Represented by Nick Freeman throughout the proceedings, Sir Harry who is 77 years of age first appeared before Isleworth Crown Court on 7 July 2015 where he was told he would face trial for assault and dangerous driving.
The alleged offence dated back to around 8pm on 27 December 2014 when it was said that Sir Harry had been driving his car on The Westway A40 in Hammersmith. His car was caused to stop by the police as they said he was travelling at 70mph in a 50 mph area.
Sir Harry stopped the car and informed the attending officer, Sergeant McDonald, that his wife was suffering from chest pains and needed to attend hospital.
In giving evidence during the trial Sir Harry said: “I told him (Sgt McDonald) that I was taking my wife to the hospital and, once I have delivered her there, I will do what you want.
“He said ‘No’ and I said ‘I’m going’. As I said that, he jumped through the window. He started frantically waving his arms around looking for a key or something.”
Sir Harry added to his evidence by stating: “I was shocked at the way he just threw himself, threw himself literally, I mean it was all happening very quickly.”
It was at this stage in his evidence that Sir Harry made clear that his foot came off the brake and his car moved forward.
In evidence Sergeant McDonald said that Sir Harry drove off as he was trying to talk to him and that his wife showed no signs of breathing difficulties.
The officer, who sated that he feared for his life as he was dragged for more than 150ft whilst clinging to the steering wheel suffered grazing to his knee.
Following his acquittal, Nick Freeman stated: “Mr Djanogly very much regrets the incident and would like to thank the court and the jury for giving his case such careful consideration.”
