Motoring giant Toyota is working with 2 app developers to produce an app which rewards drivers for not looking at their mobile phones behind the wheel.
The idea is that for every 60 miles the phone is left face down and unused, the driver is rewarded with a free cup of coffee.
The initiative is currently being run in the Aichi Prefecture, which is about 150 miles from Tokyo.
They have chosen this area as it has the worst figures for injuries and deaths arising from traffic accidents.
Road safety campaigners in Japan have put the worsening accident figures down to an increase in mobile phone usage whilst driving.
Last year some 50,000 people were arrested for mobile phone usage in the Aichi Prefecture region.
Terrifyingly, reported figures have shown that form the same area some 443,691 accidents were reported that involved injuries to death.
The new app, called Driving Barista, used the phone’s inbuilt gyro to check if has been lifted up and it’s GPS to track how far the driver has travelled.
According to an article on the website Oddity Central, the phone will reset itself to zero miles if the phone is picked up during the journey.
Shuichi Murakami of Toyota said: “In line with contributing to the ultimate goal of achieving zero traffic fatalities and zero traffic accidents, Toyota has implemented automobile safety measures as one of its top priority management concerns.
“By carrying out a new traffic safety education initiative together with Komeda and KDDI, we hope to further reduce traffic accidents.”
The app was launched on 20 September 2016, for both iOS and Android phones, but is currently only operational in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
