A French study has suggested that children often inherit their parents’ driving habits, be they good or bad.
The study was formed by research that showed 65% of drivers between the ages of 18 and 25 said they had been most influenced by the driving styles of the parents.
The French study was untaken by Ipsos of the Vinci Motorways Foundation. The Foundation is a body which aims to educate rad users about responsible driving.
Surveying some 1,000 motorists between the ages of 18 and 25, the stats revealed that those who had witnessed a parent drink driving were 3 times more likely to commit the offence themselves.
The figures were even higher for other situations where parents driving habits were repeated, such as 71% for driving when tired. This figure has to be compared with 29% for those motorists who’s parents took a break from driving when tired.
It was also found that 32% of motorists who had seen their parents get out of a car and argue with another motorist, followed the same course of conduct. This can be compared with only 7% of those motorists who’s parents didn’t.
Interestingly, 2 types of driving behaviour that did not follow the predicted route were speeding and mobile phone usage. Figures showed that the trail motorists’ predilection for either offence was not influenced by parental behaviour.
Finally, the motorists were asked to rate their parents’ driving skills. On average, their mothers ranked 8.1 out of ten and their fathers merely 7.8 out of ten.
