Road safety charity Brake! has called on Scottish ministers to follow England and Wales in tackling the issue of drug driving.
They have said that drivers who get behind the wheel whilst under the influence of controlled drugs should be treated with a zero tolerance policy.
Brake! have stated that drug driving is a serious problem, that effects driver reaction time and encourages dangerous driving behaviours that put all road users at risk.
They identified that Scotland took a lead in reducing its drink driving limit in 2014 but now needs to seriously tackle the issue of drug driving.
Since new drug driving laws were introduced in England and Wales, it has been reported that associated arrests have soared. Between March 2015 and April 2016, some 8,000 arrests were made for drug driving offence.
Gary Rae, campaigns director for Brake!, said: “I want to send the First Minister a clear message that her Government needs to root out dangerous and potentially deadly driving by introducing a drug-driving law.
“There’s evidence that the law is working in the other nations of the UK and will work in Scotland.”
