The court in the drink driving trial of England Rugby ace Danny Cipriani has heard he was “shocked to be over the drink driving limit.”
The court also learned that he had consumed 2 espresso martinis and a glass of champagne only an hour before he got behind the wheel of his car.
Shortly after 5am of 1 June 2015, Cipriani was involved in a collision with a taxi whilst he was driving his Mercedes Benz.
When the police attended he was breathalysed and arrested following a positive reading.
The court also heard that at the time of his arrest he allegedly had “glazed” eyes and smelt of alcohol.
When tested the breathalyser have a reading of 57mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, the legal limit in England and Wales being 35mg.
In giving his evidence Cipriani said that he and other England team mates had been eating sushi after their win over the Barbarians.
The court was told that he drank 2 espresso martinis and a cranberry vodka between 8.30pm and midnight.
However, Cipriani claimed he felt “fine” after he continued drinking and eating breakfast at 4am.
“I had 3 hours sleep, I woke up and I felt alright, ” he said.
He then told the court that he had a fry up breakfast, 2 more espresso martinis and a small flute of champagne before getting a taxi to his car.
During the trial, the court was read a statement from one of Cipriani’s England team mates, Chistian Wade who stated: “I know Danny well and he did not seem drunk to me at all. If he had, I would have called him a cab.”
A the time of writing Cipriani denies drink driving and the trial continues.
