After much discussion in the press and at a governmental level, the promised increase for mobile offences will now come into effect on 1 March 2017.
Overt the past 18 months the has been increased pressure from road safety campaigners to stop motorists using their mobile phones behind the wheel.
Widely reported as an epidemic, the issue seemed to come to a head with the tragic case of a family being killed by a lorry driver who took his eyes off the road as he used his smart phone.
The lorry driver, Tomasz Kroker was filmed in his cab using his smartphone to change music moments before he ploughed into the back of stationary traffic on the A34 in Berkshire.
As a result of the collision, Tracy Houghton, her two sons and step daughter all died instantly.
From 1 March 2017, any driver caught on their mobile phone behind the wheel will face a fixed penalty of 6 points and a £200 fine, even if it is their first offence. Police have also said in more serious cases they will consider offences of carless driving and dangerous driving.
Currently, the fixed penalty for mobile phone offences is 3 penalty points and a £100 fine.
