A drunk driver, who caused the death of a scooter rider on Christmas Day went on to commit a second drink driving offence, a court has heard.
Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, the Judge heard how the driver, Bronn Waddington, had also been convicted of drink driving 10 years before.
On the day of the tragedy, witnesses said how Waddington has been driving “like and idiot” whilst behind the wheel of a van.
He had been driving at twice the 30 mph speed limit in order to overtake other vehicles and at one stage he went around a bend on the wrong side of the road. It was here that Waddington collided head on with scooter rider, Aristeidis Fotopoulos.
Witnesses went on to say how Mr Fotopoulos struck the windscreen before being dragged 30 metres behind Waddington’s van. He later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
Waddington was breathalysed at the scene and found to be 3 times over the drink driving limit.
He was then caught a second time, three months later, whilst driving in Scotland. On this occasion, he gave a reading that was 6 times over the Scottish drink driving limit.
After pleading guilty to the offences, the presiding Judge stated: “On December 25, 2015, you were driving a motor vehicle, this time a medium sized van, and you were something like three times the legal limit.
“That is so far over the legal limit that you could not have contemplated that you were under the limit.
“You were not driving the van in a cautious way either – quite the opposite.”
With reference to his latest conviction for drink driving, the Judge added: “You were something like six times the limit, driving at 100mph on a motorway – that has an effect on any remorse you seek to put forward.”
Bronn Waddington was jailed for 7 years.
