In a surprise move, Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan has accused many of her officers of exaggerating their drink driving figures.
Appearing before the Irish Government’s Justice Committee, Commissioner O’Sullivan openly apologies for the failings, mistakes and wrongdoings over road traffic prosecutions during the past 10 years.
“Those mistakes and wrongdoings are unacceptable in policing terms, unacceptable in ethical terms, unacceptable in terms of public trust and, most critically, unacceptable to the advocacy and support groups involved in road safety and to those who were wrongly brought to court,” she said.
A recent audit of their data showed that between 2012 and 2016 an extra 1 million breath tests were wrongly claimed as being carried out.
Commissioner O’Sullivan also admitted that 146,000 people were taken to court and 14,700 were wrongly convicted owing to issues with the fixed penalty system.
Some drivers had been prosecuted for not filling out paperwork that they had never received. Some were taken to court even when they had completed their paperwork and paid the fine.
Commissioner O’Sullivan said the issue of drink driving breathalyser figures was “at worse deception and at best incompetence”.
