A company director who was chased by police whilst he was drink driving has been spared an immediate jail sentence by telling the court he is the breadwinner of his family and that his 6 staff would be made unemployed.
29-year-old Michael Shankland was over the drink driving limit when police chased him in a pursuit that had him driving at 70 mph in a 20 mph zone.
Appearing at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, it was also revealed that Shankland had only just received his driving licence back, following a conviction for drink driving, a few months before this latest incident.
He was disqualified from driving for 36 months, ordered to undertake 300 hours of unpaid work and to take an extended re-test after his period of disqualification. Shankland was also handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
Unsurprisingly, road safety campaigners were up in arms over the sentence.
A spokesman for the charity Brake! stated: “Drink-driving is illegal for a reason – because it leads to deaths and serious injuries and causes untold devastation to families and communities.
“There can never be an excuse for getting behind the wheel after drinking any amount of alcohol and drivers who repeatedly endanger the lives of others by drinking and driving, such as Michael Shankland, should face tough consequences.
“The suspended sentence in this case sends the wrong message as the driver in question is a repeat offender and wilfully endangered lives. Dangerous driving can be deadly. We need courts and the government to take these crimes much more seriously.”
