A man has blamed taking cough syrup for him being found to be over the drink driving limit.
The driver, Graham Elgar, was stopped by the police for a faulty brake light in January this year and was subsequently breathalysed. He admitted to drinking a glass of wine, but when breathalysed he gave a reading of 48 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The current legal limit for drink driving in England and Wales is 35 micrograms.
On being told the reading he told police that he had also been drinking Covonia cough syrup during the day also. It has been reported that Covonina contains just under 8% alcohol and each dose is equivalent to 15ml of beer. In order for a person to consume the same alcohol as in 1 pint of beer, they would need to take 38 doses of Covonia.
Appearing at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court, Elgar admitted the offence of drink driving and was banned from driving for 12 months. It was also found that he was driving without insurance and under a US driving licence.
As well as the driving ban, Elgar was fined £1,300 and ordered to pay £150 in court costs.
