Preston Crown Court has jailed a man for two years after a crash while drink-driving led to his passenger becoming blind in one eye.
After a night out in Chorley, Daniel Taylor lost control of his silver Toyota Yaris, crashing into the curb, flipping and rolling the vehicle several times before it finally came to a halt on its roof.
Fire engines from two districts attended the incident in the early hours of August 21 in Euxton, Chorley.
Taylor, the driver, had to be cut from the wreckage while his passenger, Tina Walker, was left with life-changing facial injuries, including the loss of vision in one eye. She also suffered severe facial scarring. Both were treated at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Following blood tests, it was shown that Taylor was twice the legal drink-driving limit and also had traces of drugs in his system.
Taylor had previously pleaded guilty to charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Preston Magistrates’ Court, but they deemed it appropriate that he attend Crown Court for his sentencing.
Judge Robert Altham jailed Taylor for two years, as well as imposing a three-year driving ban when he got out.
Speaking after the case, PC Martin Show of Lancashire’s Road Policing Unit said “This was a serious collision that has left the victim with life-changing injuries that she will have to deal with every day.
“The driving exhibited by Mr Taylor on the night of the crash was highly dangerous, exacerbated by the fact that he was under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs.
“It is only fitting, therefore, that a custodial sentence has been handed down by the courts to highlight how serious these matters are.”
