A woman driver who has been convicted of drink driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving has been jailed for 12 months.
The driver, Jemma Whibley was spotted by off-duty detective, Bryan Whiting as he was cycling home.
He became suspicious of her erratic driving and then noticed that she was using her mobile phone behind the wheel.
Her vehicle became stationary at a junction and Whiting approached her car, identified himself and began advising her on the dangers of using her mobile phone whilst driving. It was at the stage he noticed she seemed lethargic, confused and smelled of alcohol. He asked if she had been drinking at which point Whibley became agitated and attempted to drive off.
Whiting put his bike and himself in front of the car, however, it lurched forward, knocking his bike over and forcing him onto the bonnet.
Whiting attempted to get the keys from the ignition but Whibley started driving off only to collided with an oncoming van a few moments later.
Whibley was breathalysed at the scene and was found to be over the drink driving limit. She gave a reading of 130 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit in England and Wales is currently 35 micrograms.
Whiting suffered a broken ankle and ligament damage from which he was still suffering at the time of the hearing.
Although she admitted the offence of drink-driving, Whibley denied causing serious injuries by dangerous driving and faced trial at Bournemouth Crown Court.
After hearing all the evidence the Jury found her guilty and Whibley was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
