A man from the West Midlands has been jailed after drink-driving following a party with friends.
The party ended in tragedy when Daniel Edge, 29, from Willenhall, decided to drive his two friends home while twice the legal limit, killing one and injuring the other after colliding with a G4S van.
Edge had been attending a party with his friend Kyle Bullock, leaving in the early hours of April 9 in his uninsured MGZR. He crashed into the back of the G4S truck after it slowed down to make a turn.
Kyle, who was in the front passenger seat, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene while the other friend, who was in the back seat, needed surgery after being cut from the wreckage.
Arrested at the scene, Edge admitted to being the driver of the vehicle and that he had been drinking that night.
Edge was jailed for seven years after pleading guilty to causing both death and serious injury by dangerous driving at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from West Midlands Police’s Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Edge took a risk that night by driving his car whilst under the influence of drink and will pay for that risk for the rest of his life.
“This is a terribly sad case that shows the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, it can have catastrophic and life-changing consequences.
“I know the prison sentence imposed on him will never fill the void left within the victim’s family and I extend my condolences to them.
“This case should act as a stark reminder of the dangers of drink driving – it can kill and ruin lives, including their own.”
