A man who was drunk behind the wheel of his car has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after killing an 11-year-old girl as she walked home from school in Shrewsbury.
Witnesses say that Olivia Rees flew 20m (65ft) onto a parked car when Roger Goodall, 77, mounted the pavement and hit her.
At Wolverhampton Crown Court Hugh O’Brien-Quinn, prosecuting, said Goodall had purchased 6 bottles of wine at a supermarket before the crash on 15 June. Police later found five of the bottles but were unable to find the sixth and the court heard how he had drunk an amount of wine in a lay-by.
Goodall had also not told the DVLA about two previous blackout incidents and regardless of alcohol consumption should not have been behind the wheel. He was found to be one-and-a-half times the legal limit.
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said witnesses saw Goodall driving at speed, veering to the wrong side of the road, mounting the pavement and hitting a telegraph pole.
Police investigators discovered that when the Range Rover mounted the pavement it struck Olivia, throwing her onto a parked car causing fatal head injuries. Goodall pleaded guilty to driving while above the legal limit and death by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.
Olivia, who attended St George’s Junior School, has been described as a “passionate, spirited individual”.
