Figures from the AA have stated that the number of drink drivers involved in accidents has risen for the first time in 10 years.
And the reason seems to be that drink drivers are prepared to take the risk as their seems to be less police on the roads.
In 2015, the figures show that some 3,450 drivers failed a breath test after and accident which is an increase on the 3,227 in 2014.
Figures released by the Department For Transport (DFT) had shown that the numbers had previously fallen, year on year, since a high of 6,397 in 2005.
AA President, Edmund King described the change as “frightening” and stated: “We need better targeting of potential drink drivers so the message gets out that they won’t get away with it.
“Drivers also need to remember that they will get a minimum one year driving ban, big fine, hike in insurance costs and possibly lose their jobs.”
Another AA spokesman stated: “This is the same argument that has been used with people using mobile phones. The perception you are going to be caught is low so it tempts people.”
Lucy Amos, of road charity Brake! added: “Any amount of alcohol, even amounts below our current drink-drive limit, increases the likelihood of a driver being involved in a fatal crash.
“We need effective enforcement and appropriate penalties to ensure that people have the expectation that they will be caught and that they will be punished when driving over the limit.”
