A lorry driver from Sheffield has been banned from the roads after being caught drink driving while three times the legal drink driving limit.
He was caught by police on the A14 in Bury St Edmunds on June 5 at around 7.35pm. They had received reports of a suspected drink driver on the northbound A12 at Capel St Mary. After following the man onto the A134, they asked him to pull over.
On approaching the driver, the attending officer said, he could immediately smell alcohol, and the driver then failed a roadside breath test.
Further testing revealed him to have 109mcg alcohol per 100ml breath against the legal limit of 35mcg.
Chief Inspector David Giles, who tracked down the lorry and arrested the defendant said: “I have dealt with many drink-drivers in my career, but stopping someone more than three times the limit who was in charge of a vehicle of that size, is among the most alarming.
“I am simply shocked and astounded that a professional driver would take such a risk and show complete disregard for the safety of other road users – and himself – by getting behind the wheel in that condition.
“As a result, he will now face a long spell off the road and this will no doubt have serious implications for his current employment.”
After pleading guilty to drink driving in front of Magistrates in Ipswich, he was banned from driving for 28 months. He was also fined £170 and ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work as part of a one-year community order.
