A pensioner from Burnley has appeared in front of Magistrates in the town after being charged with drink driving.
The 69-year-old told the court that, having been caught at 11.20am, he didn’t think he would be over the drink driving limit. He added that he was embarrassed to be in court having never been in trouble before, and was sorry for what he had done.
Witnesses saw the man parking in the town centre having previously been seen reversing on the car park of a closed down pub which had been coned off.
Officers breathalysed the man who gave a result of 46mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
Defending the man, David Lawson told the court that his client was extremely embarrassed by his actions.
“He accepts he had been drinking, but he didn’t think it would be over the limit,” said Mr Lawson.
He went on to say that his client had thought it safer to move his car from where he had parked it at the pub as he believed it would be safer, and so drove it a short distance into the town centre. He cooperated fully when the police stopped him.
“He apologises through me,” said Mr Lawson. “He is very remorseful for his actions and he is a man of good character.”
The man pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol on Manchester Road, Burnley, on September 25th.
Magistrates banned him from driving for a year as well as imposing a fine of £120, a £30 victim surcharge, and £85 costs.
