A new roadside breathalyser test, which will not allow drink driving motorists any time to sober up, is being introduced as part of a government crackdown on drink driving.

The new tests mean that police can get instant proof against drivers suspected of being over the legal limit.

Current tests are given on the spot, however, they are not specific enough to be admissible as evidence. The new devices will mean that those who are only just over the drink drive limit when they are pulled over will not have time to process the alcohol quickly enough to pass later tests at a police station.

This will not only produce instant evidence for the prosecution but also free up police time and resources.

Roads Minister Jesse Norman said: “This new technology will enable the police to enforce the alcohol limit more rigorously on those who drive after drinking, putting others at risk.”

According to latest figures, in 2016 more than 460,000 people were breathalysed with 59,000 testing positive or refusing to take the test.

The government will commit £350,000 to the tendering process, inviting companies to produce the drink driving detection device for police forces nationwide. It is expected to be available by the summer of 2020.
