A Grimsby man has been fined £400 and banned from driving for 17 months after drink-driving to get more beer.
Prosecuting, Martin Howarth told magistrates in Grimsby how a PCSO saw a Mercedes parked half-way over a speed bump. The officer saw two men walk across the road and get in before starting the engine.
The officer suspected they had consumed alcohol, and opened the door of the vehicle, asking 46-year-old Michael Batchelor if he had been drinking. Batchelor denied this, but the officer could smell alcohol.
The PCSO called in the police, and Batchelor told how it was his daughter’s 18th birthday. A party had been going on all day, and he had dropped her at the railway station for her to get a train to a rave in Leeds.
Tests showed him to have 79mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
In mitigation, Ian Durant explained that Batchelor had finished work at 4pm before having a couple of glasses of wine with friends. He had been drinking after dropping his daughter at the station and volunteered to make the short drive to get more beer.
“Unfortunately the officer noted him parked straddling a speed bump,” said Mr Durant.
Batchelor, a father-of-three, was a property manager responsible for 25 houses. Without his licence he would lose his job.
Magistrates fined him £400 for drink-driving, banned him from driving for 17 months, and ordered to pay £85 costs as well as the £40 victim surcharge.
