Sheriffs in Edinburgh have banned Northern Ireland football manager Michael O’Neill from driving for 16 months, as well as handing him a £1,300 fine after he was caught drink-driving.

He was stopped in the early hours of the morning on 10 September on the outskirts of the city.

Chloe Shoniwa, prosecuting, told the court that police officers had “reason to stop” O’Neill as he drove along the bypass between Lothianburn and Straiton.

A roadside test returned a positive result, and later tests showed O’Neill to be nearly three times the Scottish drink-driving limit, with a breath-alcohol level of 65mcg per 100ml breath. The legal limit in Scotland is 22mcg.

James Mulgrew, representing the former Northern Ireland International player, say “This was simply a bad error of judgement on the part of Mr O’Neill.”

O’Neill, who started out playing for league club Coleraine and went on to play Newcastle United, Dundee United, and Hibernian, is currently preparing the Northern Ireland team for the World Cup playoffs.

Last month, the Irish Football Association said it was “aware of an alleged drink-driving incident involving Michael O’Neill”.
