A 46-year-old man has been banned from driving for over two years after being caught drink-driving while more than three times the legal limit.
Grandfather Martin Wilson, from Redcar, was “extremely surprised” when tests showed him to be so far over the limit after drinking three pints with friends at a Thornaby snooker club on December 1.
He was arrested on the A174, saying he decided to drive as he “didn’t feel tipsy” and didn’t think he had consumed enough alcohol over the two-and-a-half hour session to be over the limit.
The legal limit for drink-driving is 35mcg alcohol per 100ml breath, however, Wilson’s breathalyser results showed him to have 108mcg in his system.
An officer from the probation service said: “The only explanation he could come up with was that his friends may have put shots in his pints.
“I do find that a little difficult to believe.”
Brett Wildridge, acting for Wilson, told Teeside Magistrates Court that his client was a “hard-working family man” working as a London-based construction engineer and that his ban could have “far-reaching consequences” on his ability to support his family.
During the sentencing, the court also heard how Wilson largely avoids alcohol during the week but may drink up to eight pints on a Saturday.
Mitigating at the sentencing, Wildridge added that Wilson “fully accepts” wrongdoing, but feels as though he was let down by his friends.
This was, however, Wilson’s second drink-driving conviction – his first being in 2005. Magistrates banned him from driving for 26 months and handed him a fine of £1077, reduced because of his guilty plea. He was also ordered to pay a £107 charge and £85 costs.
