An 18-year-old RAF serviceman has been banned from driving for a year after being caught drink driving following a night out.
The prosecution told Elgin Sheriff Court that the man had returned to his base at RAF Lossiemouth from a night out at around 6.20am on July 28.
Guards witnessed him driving out of the base again about 20 minutes later and then saw him driving erratically when parking his car on his return some two hours later. They decided to question him and then contacted the police.
A breath test showed him to have 53mcg alcohol per 100ml breath – more than twice the Scottish drink driving limit of 22mcg.
Apologising on behalf of the serviceman, Stephen Carty said: “He is a young man who made a gross error of judgement which was affected by the alcohol he consumed.”
“This whole incident is one of great regret and embarrassment to him as he has let down himself and the RAF.
“He wanted me to pass on his apologies to the court and alongside the punishment he will receive here, there will be further action taken by the RAF.”
The young man has only been driving since last September and joined the RAF 18 months ago.
Anticipated punishment from the RAF may include ineligibility for promotion for three years and a ban on overseas assignments until further notice.
Describing the incident as “a very foolish thing to do” Sheriff Chris Dickson banned him from driving for 12 months and imposed a fine of £400 to be paid within four months.
He must also attend a drink driving rehabilitation course.
