Driving With A Mobile Phone Killed One Person Every Ten Days In 2016
Figures from the Department for Transport show that drivers using a mobile phone were involved in crashes killing the equivalent of one person every 10 days in 2016.
The data says that 35 deaths were recorded in accidents where the driver was distracted by their phone, an increase from 22 the previous year.
Such incidents led to a further 137 road users being seriously injured, and motoring groups have called for illegal use of mobile phones at the wheel to be tackled following a string of high-profile cases and research suggesting how widespread the problem has become.
Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “Even this big rise in fatalities is likely to be an under-reporting of the true scale of the problem which can be difficult for police to detect.
“It seems too many drivers still can’t resist picking up the mobile whilst at the wheel.
“Forget all the technological solutions, the best ‘drive safe’ mode is reached via one click of the power-off button.”
Since March 1, drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel have faced a £200 fine and six points on their licence, essentially doubling the previous penalty of a £100 fine and 3 points.
The government also announced this year that the maximum penalty for causing death by dangerous driving, which includes driving while using a mobile phone, will increase from 14 years in prison to life.
