A tip-off from a member of the public has led to a drug driver from York being banned from the roads.

Amember of the public saw a man staggering around the Layerthorpe Asda car park just after 8pm on January 22.

He then got into a grey Audi A3 and drove aggressively toward the retail park at Foss Island.

The witness immediately alerted the police, giving information to help them locate the vehicle. They pulled the car over and arrested the driver at 8.15pm.

On searching the car, officers found a quantity of cannabis and arrested the man on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drugs.

Further testing revealed him to be over the legal drug driving limit for cannabis.

PC John Armstrong, of the York City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I have nothing but praise for the member of the public who quickly spotted the danger signs and wasted no time in calling the police.

“This ensured a very quick response to minimise the risk this drug-affected driver posed to other road users.

“We encourage everyone to report such extremely irresponsible, foolish and criminal behaviour to the police without delay so we can take decisive action and keep our roads safe.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to drug driving and was disqualified for 14 months. He was also fined £100.
