A Dorset man has been jailed for five-and-a-half years at Bournemouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by driving without due care and attention while under the influence of drugs in April last year.
Jamie Myers, 25, was driving his Ford Escort on the afternoon of 2 April when he turned into the path of an oncoming motorcycle ridden by 74-year-old Sid Samways and his wife Barbara, 71, who was riding pillion.
Mr Samways was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife died four days later after being airlifted to hospital.
Tests showed that Myers had 211mcg Benzoylecgonine (BZE), a metabolite of cocaine, per litre of blood, where the legal limit is 50mcg.
It was also revealed that the DVLA had in fact revoked Myers’ driving licence on 13 March after he had accrued six penalty points during his new driver period. The letter informing him of this was found unopened in his car following the collision.
Mr and Mrs Samways’ family issued a statement saying “We would like to remind people of the dangers of driving after taking drugs as we do not want another family to have to suffer a similar loss.”
