Fewer, But More Targeted Drink Driving Tests In Wales This Summer
Figures released by police in Wales reveal they conducted 50% fewer drink-driving tests during this summer’s campaign; however, a senior police officer claims they were taking a “more targeted approach.”
The four Welsh police forces conducted 4,622 breath tests this June, as opposed to 9,532 in June 2016 – a drop of 51%.
In Gwent, the figure was 88 tests, compared to 1,004 last year.
For South Wales, the figures barely changed, with 1,629 drink-drive tests this year against 1,819 in 2016.
The Dyfed-Powys force conducted 1,133 breathalyser tests this year, against 2,751 last year while North Wales Police conducted 1,772 compared to 3,958 in 2016.
Supt Glyn Fernquest, force lead for Roads Policing in Gwent, said: “This year we have taken a targeted approach to tackling this issue, working with the community and acting on specific information provided to us.
“This has resulted in us being in the right place at the right time to deal with the small minority of irresponsible drivers, who make the decision to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
“Taking just one chance can have truly devastating consequences for you, your loved ones and others road users.
“Please plan ahead and ensure that if you are out having a drink, you have a safe and reliable way of getting home.”
Although the forces conducted fewer tests, there was an increase in the numbers failed or refused, with 5.9% recorded as such this year compared to 3.2% last year.
