The country’s leading road traffic lawyer has added his voice to demands to outlaw drivers making “hands free” mobile phone calls.
Nick Freeman, aka Mr Loophole, said that speaking on a mobile phone was a major cause of distraction, irrespective of whether the call was hands free or not.
On the grounds of safety alone, any form of mobile interactive communication should be banned.
In addition, Mr Freeman said the use of “sat navs” was an equal distraction as drivers unfamiliar with a route were pre occupied with the screen as opposed to concentrating on the road ahead.
Mr Freeman said: “Many drivers now use their cars as their mobile office and save telephone calls for when they are driving.
“Instead of being aware of their surroundings, drivers are mentally absorbed with their conversation.”
He added: “To drive safely you need to give full concentration to your driving and not allow yourself to be distracted by these interactive devices.
“The only way to prevent this is to ban their use whilst the vehicle is mobile.”
