New figures indicate that, despite a crackdown by the government and police, 500 people are caught using a mobile phone while driving every week.

In the 12 months to March this year, 26,000 motorists were caught committing the offence, with 500 losing their license as they had been driving for less than two years.

Tougher laws introduced in March last year mean that motorists caught using their mobile while driving face a fine of £200 and six points on their license.

According to a report from the Department for Transport, 35 people were killed in accidents in 2016 where the driver was using a mobile.

A learner driver was jailed recently after an accident during which her half-sister was very seriously injured. The driver was on a two-minute video call at the time. She was so distracted that she failed to brake before the collision, causing “life-changing injuries” to her passenger.

Chief Constable Anthony Bangham from West Mercia Police, the lead on road policing for the National Police Chief’s Council, warned that people were still underestimating the risks of using their mobile phone while driving.

Road Safety Minister Jesse Norman said that despite the new figures, last year’s new penalties had “proven to be a strong deterrent”.

He said: “Everyone has a role to play to encourage drivers to put their phone away and not use it at the wheel.”

Pete Williams, road safety spokesman for the RAC, said: “Drivers really need to ask themselves what is so important that they must risk their life, and the lives of others, by using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel.”
