It has been reported that a police armed response vehicle has been rammed by a drink driver in a bid to escape capture.
The driver, Mohammed Islam, had a car full of passengers as he was chased by police through Bedford town centre in August 2016.
The chase began following an incident at a petrol station which ended up with a police armed response unit being deployed.
As the police spotted Islam, he sped away, driving the wrong way around roundabouts and reaching speeds of 100mph.
The chase ensued.
Making his appearance from the dock, Leeds Crown Court heard that the police vehicle had been able to block Islam’s path but only to cause him to swerve violently to the right and then ram the police vehicle.
Islam then continued to accelerate his car in an attempt to push the police out of the way but he eventually came to a stop.
Following Islam’s arrest it was discovered that he was already on bail for other offences which included drink driving and dangerous driving.
It was also discovered that he was in breach of a suspended prison sentence for possession of cannabis with intent to supply.
Presiding, Judge Michael Kay QC said: “The sort of dangers presented by those who drive in this manner are seen every day in the newspapers. They cause serious injury and at times death.
“They are a nightmare for any lawful road user, and at some point I suspect Parliament will decide the sentences should go up.”
Islam had been remanded in custody since his arrest in August.
Islam was sentenced to 22 months in prison and was disqualified from driving for 3 years, that ban to begin at the end of his prison sentence.
