A 24 year old man who the Judge described as having a “truly dreadful” driving record has been jailed for 4 months.
On this occasion the offence was one of aggravated vehicle taking.
The defendant, Adeel Khan, had managed to collect a number of driving offences including including careless driving, dangerous driving, driving without a licence and a number of offences of driving whilst disqualified.
His probation office described him as “showing immaturity and a complete disregard for the law.”
For this latest offence the court heard that Khan had been the passenger in a stolen VW Scirocco that caused a 3 mile police chase on 19 October 2015.
The car had been stolen 3 days earlier as part of a burglary and was valued at £15,000.
At the time of the driving offence, police had been alerted to a separate incident when the noticed the stolen car. Police tried to stop the car but it rammed into their vehicle and sped off.
The VW Scirocco was also being driven with false number plates.
During the ensuing chase the car jumped through a red light and also hit a car belonging to a member of the public.
A police helicopter was called into help with the case. Both the driver and Khan abandoned the car with Khan being detained a short while later.
During the sentence hearing the court heard that Khan had 14 convictions arising from 29 offences.
At a previous sentence hearing for other driving offences, Khan had received a 12 month prison sentence for the offences of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and driving without a licence. This happened only 2 days after committing the offence on 19 October.
Khan had been due to be released by was serving “extra time” owing to being found with a mobile phone whilst in prison.
Along with the 4 month prison sentence, Khan was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
