The Judge who has sentenced Norma Stokes after she ploughed into a group of school girls has asked for an urgent review into the law on elderly drivers.
As previously reported, Ms Stokes an 80 year old driver lost control of her car when she became “confused and befuddled”.
She was driving in heavy traffic when she mistook the accelerator for the brake, mounted the pavement and drive into a group of school girls between the age of 11 and 16.
5 girls were seriously injured and 1 of their number has suffered a significant brain injury leaving her with epilepsy, short term memory loss and diabetes.
The court heard that witnesses described the scene as something out of a disaster movie, with members of the public rushing to give assistance to the girls.
It was reported that the carnage only ended after Stokes’ car ripped off the open door from a school bus and crashed into 2 parked cars.
Ms Stokes pleaded guilty to 5 counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
In passing sentence at Liverpool Crown Court, Judge David Aubrey QC stated: “There was mayhem and carnage. Chaos, shock and horror descended.
“This case illustrates the need for the Government to urgently review, if it is not doing so already, the manner in which the elderly can or should be permitted to continue driving and hold a UK driving licence.”
Ms Stokes received a 2 year period of custody, suspended for 2 years and banned from driving for life.
