A lorry driver who killed 4 people as a result of him being on his mobile phone has been jailed for 10 years.

Driver Tomasz Kroker, was captured on his lorry’s in cab camera using his smartphone, moments before ploughing into a queue of stationary traffic.

In one of the cars was mother Tracy Houghton, her 2 sons and her partner’s daughter.

As a result of the collision, all 4 died instantly.

Footage published on the BBC website clearly shows Kroker on his phone as his lorry closes in on the stationary traffic.

The sentencing Judge commented that Kroker’s attention to driving was so poor that he “might as well have had his eyes closed.”

The court heard that Kroker had been scrolling through his music play list at the time of the crash.

The Judge further described the case as one of the most horrific that she had seen.

Outside court, the mother of her partner’s daughter, Kate Goldsmith said: “We urge you to make a personal commitment to stop using mobile phones while driving and make our roads safer for everyone.

“The 10-year sentence will not ease our pain and suffering, nor do we believe it will send a strong enough message to those who lack the self-restraint to not use a mobile phone when driving.”

After pleading guilty to 4 counts of causing death by dangerous driving, the court heard that only an hour before the pile up, Kroker had signed a declaration with his employer that he would not use his phone whilst driving.

Furthermore, evidence stated that Kroker initially told the police his brakes had failed as traffic came to a sudden stop in front of him.
