Roads Minster Andrew Jones MP gave a speech to the National Roads Policing Conference, where he revealed the new drug driving figures.
It has now been a full year since the new drug driving laws came into force, and Jones announced that 8,500 drug drivers were convicted during 2016. This compares with the 879 convictions in 2015.
The new legislation, introduced in 2015, made it illegal for a person to drive a vehicle over a certain limit for defined drugs, within their system. These specified drugs included eight illegal drugs and eight prescription drugs.
Those drivers caught drink driving face a minimum driving ban of 12 months, up to six months in prison and an unlimited fine.
Jones also told the audience that the government had used a £1 million fund to train 1,000 police officers, throughout England and Wales in “gathering evidence of impairment caused by drugs”.
He also talked about drivers using their mobile phones behind the wheel and the increased fixed penalty being raised to a £200 fine and 6 penalty points.
Jones turned to drink driving offences and stated that although drink driving deaths had fallen by 80% over the past 50 years, more needed to be done to ensure the trend.
He stated that high-risk offenders now needed to prove they were not alcohol dependent before getting their driving licences back, and those drivers who had failed the breathalyser test were now not automatically able to demand a blood test in the hope they would sober up in the meantime.
