A man who crashed into the back of another vehicle on the M4 while using his mobile phone has been banned from driving for a year.
Swansea Crown Court heard that the 25-year-old man was seen swerving across the road and on his mobile phone as he drove along the motorway.
He then ran into the back of another vehicle as he drove through Port Talbot in his cousin’s 4×4, which he was not insured to drive.
Prosecuting, Ashanti-Jade Walton said that the man was seen driving eastbound on the M4, swerving across the carriageway from the near-side lane to the hard shoulder and then over to the outside lane on December 17, 2017. He collided with another vehicle between junctions 42 and 41.
The court heard that the man had been involved in phone calls about his ill mother in Sri Lanka and work matters at the time of the accident.
The man, who lives in Rochdale, had been to South Wales to attend a religious festival.
Judge Peter Heywood told the defendant that he had clearly not been in control of the vehicle because he had been talking on his phone.
He went on to say that it was a serious offence, but one that could be dealt with through a community order.
The defendant, speaking through a Tamil interpreter, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while using a mobile phone, and driving without insurance.
He was banned from driving for a year, given a 12-month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work and had his license endorsed.
