Hereford Magistrates Court has heard how a man caught speeding at 95mph along the motorway was under the influence of drugs at the time.
Police stopped 40-year-old Michael Ellis at junction two of the M50 on July 26. Amy Davies prosecuting, told the court how police officers were overtaken by a Ford C-Max driven by Ellis at 12.20am. They followed him for 1.5 miles and recorded him driving at an average speed of 95mph.
Mrs Davies said, “During this time Ellis was weaving side to side in his lane, so police stopped the vehicle.”
Once stopped, police observed a strong smell of cannabis coming from the defendant and a subsequent drug swipe test proved positive. He was later found to have 9.5 micro grammes of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (the active compound found in cannabis)per 100ml blood. The legal limit is two micro grammes.
Ellis, from Barry, South Glamorgan, pleaded guilty to drug driving.
In mitigation, Chris Read said that his client didn’t realise the drug was still in his system as he’d consumed it several hours earlier. He added that Ellis didn’t feel impaired.
Ellis was disqualified from driving for 12 months by the magistrates, as well as ordered to pay a £40 fine, £30 victim surcharge, and £60 costs.
