Alarming figures released by the insurance company, Direct Line has shown that out of the 35.3 million driving licence holders in England and Wales, some 3.4 million of them have not disclosed notifiable medical conditions to the DVLA.
Motorists who do not make disclosures about their medical conditions are liable for a £1,000 fine and possible criminal proceedings if they are involved in an accident.
The Direct Line survey has also shown some knowledge gaps in what is required with medical conditions, driving and the DVLA.
The figures show that some 51% of those surveyed dod not think that their medical condition affected their driving ability. 14% didn’t realise that they had to inform the DVLA about their medical condition.
5% didn’t see the point in making a declaration to the DVLA and 4% had never thought about it.
Meanwhile, 5% of those drivers interviewed had not made any disclosures to the DVLA as they were concerned that their driving licences may have been revoked.
Out of the large number of motorists who are not making these medical declarations, on 64 motorists were convicted for non medical disclosure offences last year.
Gus Parker, director at Direct Line stated; “With some medical conditions having more of an impact on driving ability than being over the drink-drive limit, it’s frightening that almost one in 10 motorists drives with a notifiable medical condition they have not reported to the DVLA.
“It’s clear that there’s no deterrent for those flouting the law in this way, as shown by the small amount of people convicted.”
