The country’s best known motoring lawyer has blasted Highways Agency plans to reduce the speed on a 32-mile stretch of the M1 to 60mph.
The government quango – which has recently introduced variable speed limits along a number of sections of motorway – says the lower speed limit, from junction 28, near Matlock, Derbyshire, to junction 35a, north of Rotherham, will be enforced between the hours of 7am and 7pm.
It claims the lower speed will help reduce pollution and improve journey times in peak hours.
Nick Freeman – aka Mr Loophole – said: “I’m sure I speak for tens of thousands of drivers in being totally opposed to this reduction in the speed limit.
“Cutting pollution has nothing to do with it – raising revenue has! It will be rigorously enforced by robotic cameras and every driver who goes over it will be rewarded with financial penalties, penalty points and potential disqualifications.
“Before the last election, the Conservative Party were advocating an increase in the speed limit to 80mph, which I whole heartedly support. This is a spectacuar U-turn based on a totally spurious reason.
“No doubt, this will be the first of many and in my view it won’t be long before we have, in effect, a national restriction”
