A recent poll of 2,043 drivers has shown that thirty-four percent are still illegally using them behind the wheel without a hands-free kit. This is despite high-profile campaigns from the police to highlight the dangers and increasing punishments in the courts.
A similar study by the RAC in September 2016 indicated a figure of 31%, which is an 8% increase on 2014.
It seems that new penalties, with an increased fine of £200 and six license points, are not discouraging drivers from using their phones at the wheel.
Figures show that 26% use a smartphone as a satnav, 19% read text messages, and 12% send them. 19% took calls while driving, and 16% made calls while not using a hands-free system. Offenders are three times more likely than anyone else to be in the 18-24 age bracket.
Communications director at Kwik Fit, Roger Griggs, said “The findings of this study are very worrying indeed.
“While car manufacturers have made great strides in improving safety, it is vital that drivers remember that they are the most important safety feature in the vehicle.”
A recent investigation by the Press Association has shown that the number of traffic police has decreased by thirty percent, which may be giving drivers the confidence to use their phone illegally, despite the risk of prosecution.
