Derbyshire Police have announced they are using a team of unmarked police motorbikes to clamp down on drivers continuing to use their mobile phones behind the wheel.
The idea is that some motorists are still using their mobile phones in stationary traffic and therefore flouting the law. The unmarked police motorbikes are able to weave through stationary traffic and check up as to who is doing what behind the wheel.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “Our officers have cameras on their helmets so we will have recorded evidence of anyone breaking the law by using their mobile phones at the wheel.
“We know people are sometimes tempted to check their phones while waiting in stationary traffic but the message is don’t. You are breaking the law and it’s not worth the risk. This is a very serious issue. Safety is our priority.”
The new mobile phone laws, launched on 1 March 2017, doubled the previous penalties to a £200 fine and 6 penalty points. This has made a number of drivers fall foul of the totting up provisions and some new drivers having their driving licences revoked and forced to take their driving test again.
After their first day of the new mobile phones laws going into force, a police spokesman for Derbyshire Police stated: “By 8.15am on the day we launched our campaign, someone had lost their licence.
“As well as unmarked motorbikes, we also had an unmarked HGV lorry operating on roads such as the M1 – which caught both lorry drivers and motorists.
“We will be using the unmarked HGV again at some point in the future. We won’t be publicising when, as we want to catch the culprits.”
