Reports are in from the US detailing that a coalition has been formed by Volvo, Ford, Lyft, Uber and Google to lobby the US Government over self driving driving technology.
This news comes just days after the US Government Audit Office (GAO) has released their report on cyber security.
On 26 April, the new coalition released a statement saying it will: “work with lawmakers, regulators and the public to realize the safety and societal benefits of self-driving vehicles.”
Further reports have detailed that the former Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), David Strickland will stand as the coalitions spokesperson and counsel. It is of interest to note that during his tenure at the NHTSA he issued the first “automated vehicle policy”.
Mr Strickland, a keen advocate of self drive technology has stated that self drive technology will make America’s roads safer and ease traffic congestion. He been quoted saying: “The best path for this innovation is to have one clear set of federal standards, and the Coalition will work with policymakers to find the right solutions that will facilitate the deployment of self-driving vehicles.”
Taggart Matthiesen of Lyft has commented to SC Magazine that: “Eventually, the world will move to one where autonomous vehicles are a major mode of transportation.”
He continued: ““They’ll increase accessibility, affordability — and importantly, improve safety.
“Working with this coalition is a great way to impact the future of transportation and our cities.”
The report issued by the GAO was in relation to concern raised about the potential “hacking” of wireless car technologies. This will also have an impact on the technology used in driverless cars.
