Drivers who used the hard shoulder of the M62 following a car accident could be facing prosecution it has been reported.
The accident which took place on the evening of 27 March 2016 involved a car and a fuel spillage. An ambulance was trying to reach the scene but couldn’t get through owing drivers on the hard shoulder trying to avoid the traffic jam.
Reports have indicated that a paramedic in the ambulance was seen getting out and telling drivers to move off the hard shoulder and out of the way.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson has stated that they have been successful in bringing similar types of prosecution in the past with fixed penalties for £100 fine and 3 penalty points.
Another spokesperson stated: “Driving down the hard shoulder is a motoring offence. We would prosecute for this offence but it would be dependent on available evidence.”
A number of motorists showed their disapproval of hard shoulder usage on Twitter calling the drivers “selfish” and “disgusting people who only think of themselves”. One user tweeted that she was in a jam for over and hour and saw around 100 cars on the hard shoulder.
