Calls to allow defendants in criminal proceedings to appear via Skype and FaceTime has won the support of the country’s leading defence lawyer.
Nick Freeman said the use of internet technology, being mooted by the country’s most senior judge, would reduce costs in administrative hearings.
However Mr Freeman, aka Mr Loophole, warned as a caveat that whilst he was supportive of adopting modern technology in UK courts, it was imperative defendants were present when their case was finalised.
Mr Freeman said: “I firmly believe the use of internet video calls should be seriously considered, particularly in light of the savings in terms of money and court time.
“These savings could be utilised to avoid the proposed Legal Aid cuts.”
