A student has learned that not being able to afford a taxi does not mean you can drink and drive.
20 year old student, Daniel Humes was spotted by police driving his car at 70mph in a 50mph.
Nottingham Magistrates’ Court then heard that police pulled his car over for speeding but also smelled alcohol on his breath.
He told police that he had had a drink some 4 hours with friends before he drove.
Hume also told the court that he didn’t usually drink.
He continued: “We didn’t have enough money for the taxi. Looking back, we should have borrowed money. I should not have been driving that night.”
When breathalysed, Hume gave a reading of 59mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The current legal drink driving limit is 35mg.
In passing sentence, the Magistrates’ stated: “”We have been deliberating whether to give you a longer ban because you were speeding at 70mph in a 50 area. We have decided to be lenient.
“We have based the fine on your limited income and your plea of guilty.”
Hume received a 1 year driving ban and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs.
