A 17 year old boy driver has appeared in a Belfast Court, accused of knocking down and killing a 19 year old jogger.
On the afternoon of 9 April 2016 19 year old student, Lesley-Ann McCarragher was out jogging close to her family home in County Armagh. A white SAAB, travelling at around 90mph, undertook another vehicle and ploughed straight into the teenager.
The white SAAB failed to stop after hitting Lesley-Ann and just turned around and drove away.
Lesley-Ann was airlifted to hospital in Belfast but tragically died from her injuries on Sunday morning.
In hearing the outline of the prosecution case, the court heard that the police were still looking for a black VW Golf that they believed was racing with the white SAAB.
The court heard that during their investigations, the accused 17 year old driver had stated that he had sold the white SAAB to 2 men at the roadside some 45 minutes before the accident.
The court also heard that the accused at contacted the previous owner of the white SAAB and asked her to tell the police that she had sold the car to white foreigners.
The car was later discovered hidden in a garage belonging to the accused’s brother.
A detective sergeant in the case also told the court that the accused had shown no remorse for what had happened.
The accused, who has not been named for legal reasons appeared in a cleared courtroom so that no members of the public could be present.
The accused was charged with a number of motoring offences including causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and failing to report an accident.
