Three Year Ban For Drink Driver Caught At Four Times The Legal Limit
An IT specialist who commuted from London to York has been banned from driving for three years after being caught behind the wheel while four times the drink-drive limit.
Prosecutor Cathy Turnbull told York Magistrates Court how 38-year-old Ramanan Nathan was arrested on July 9 after testing positive on a roadside breathalyser test. He was found to have 142mcg alcohol in 100ml breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
Mitigating, Andrew Craven explained how Nathan had been under a great deal of strain following family illness and other issues.
He had been living in St Albans, but his wife had to spend a lot of time in Yorkshire, which enabled him to hide his drinking. The couple had moved to York in January, but Nathan still worked in London and commuted regularly by train, or car to the Leeds office.
His probation report indicated that Nathan had sought help from Alcoholics Anonymous and was looking to relocate his work to the north.
Friends and others who knew him were shocked to hear of his behaviour and his actions were very out of character, said Craven. Nathan had not drunk at all since he was caught. “He has taken the view he has stopped drinking, he is not going to drink, he is not a drinker,” Craven added.
Following his arrest, his confession to his wife and friends about his drinking has helped relieve some of the strain.
Nathan was sentenced to a community order with 250 hours unpaid work, banned from driving for three years, ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £85 statutory surcharge.
