A drink driver who ploughed into the side of a taxi, seriously injuring his passenger has escaped jail.
Following the accident McQueen was breathalysed and gave a reading of 54mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.
As this offence took place in Scotland, the legal limit for driving was 22mg. In England and Wales, the current drink driving limit is 35mg.
The driver, Gregg McQueen pleaded guilt to drink driving and dangerous driving earlier in the proceedings.
His passenger, Laura Wilson suffered a dislocated and fractured hip along with a broken arm.
In her evidence, Miss Wilson stated that she saw McQueen drink 2 vodkas before he got behind the wheel. She also stated that McQueen had been driving at around 40mph before the crash occurred.
In sentencing, McQueen heard that he would not go to prison and the sentence imposed was to be seen as a direct alternative to custody.
McQueen was also told: “She (Miss Wilson) knew how much you had to drink, that’s not to blame her for this accident but it’s a factor I have taken into account.
“You could have killed yourself and her. People are all to blasé about their ability to drive under the influence of alcohol and you have found out the hard way.”
McQueen was disqualified from driving for 2 years and ordered to complete 160 hours of unpaid work.
