Anonymity for the accused in sex cases needs an urgent review, loophole lawyer Nick Freeman has demanded.
The celebrity lawyer and long term anonymity campaigner made the renewed call after The Crown Prosecution Service today (June 16) said there was insufficient evidence to charge Sir Cliff Richard, and no further action should be taken against him.
Mr Freeman said: “This is another prime example of sexual offence allegations being tried publicly in the media before the accused has even been charged.
“The type of damage that these types of allegations can cause to a person’s reputation is immense. The stigma of these allegations may remain with him for a long time to come.”
Mr Freeman added: “I fully support the need for the anonymity of victims in sex cases and it affords them added protection and support when the case is being brought to trial.
“The continuing issue is that the same protection needs to be provided to those people accused of sexual offences owing to the strength of public feeling regarding these types of crimes.”
“In the light of what has happened over Sir Cliff Richard and the amount of press coverage, even though he was never even charged, there has never been a more high profile case to call for an urgent review of the law for defendant anonymity in sex cases.
“I have been campaigning for this type of change through my website and media appearances for a long time.
“All such matters of anonymity in sex cases should still rest with the discretion of the Judge, who may decide that naming an accused would be in the safety and interest of the public, “ Mr Freeman said.
The allegations surrounding Sir Cliff Richard first came to public attention when a search of his house was publicly broadcasted by the media back in August 2014.
At the time of this search Sir Cliff, who was not arrested, stated that the allegation was “completely false”.
