A man who sped through red lights at 70mph before leading police on a 100mph chase down the M6 has been jailed in his sentencing at Warwick Crown Court.
Footage captured by the police on their dashcam shows the moment 26-year-old Curtis Steward sped away from them having run through a red light at 70mph. He then proceeded to weave around other motorists trying to escape police as they attempted to box him in. He drove onto a grass verge, then reversed back onto a dual carriageway.
At Junction 5 near Castle Bromwich he reached speeds of 100mph before leaving the motorway 15 miles later at Junction 3, again running through two red lights at 70mph in a 30mph zone.
Officers finally caught up to him as he stalled his van. He was found to be one-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit.
Stewart pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in addition to an earlier charge of dangerous driving from June. In that incident, he was seen driving the wrong way around a road island and crashing into another car, after which he got out of his van, apologised and laughed, and drove away.
He was sentenced to 23 months in prison in total for the two charges, receiving fourteen months for his speeding and nine months for the incident in June. Steward was also banned from driving for your years and eleven months.
PC Mitch Darby, who was one of the officers in the pursuit, said: “His driving was shocking.
“He was first spotted by a police dog unit in Birmingham doing over 70mph and going through red lights, and that was without a police car behind him.
“He drove up an embankment before temporarily reversing down the M6 and just missed a stinger when he exited the motorway.
“He then drove the wrong way over a blind humpback bridge.
“It was his appalling driving which ultimately stopped him when he was boxed in after slowing for a corner.
“It was lucky he didn’t have an accident.”
