A woman who killed her daughter in a drink-drive crash has been jailed for over 6 years at Bournemouth Crown Court.
Amanda Pike, 34, crashed into a van near Blandford, Dorset, on 24 August while over the limit for drugs and alcohol, leaving her daughter with fatal head injuries.
At an earlier hearing, Pike admitted causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, having drunk half of a 200ml bottle of vodka on the day of the accident. She also admitted drinking and taking cocaine with her partner the evening before, even though she knew she would be driving her daughter the next day.
Pike collected her daughter from her ex-husband Sam’s house, partially strapping her in the rear of the car, before pulling out in front of the van with which she collided.
Both she and her daughter Louisa suffered head injuries, for which Louisa’s proved fatal, while the 44-year-old female driver of the van received injuries to her hand and arm.
The prosecution said that Pike’s alcohol level was over three-and-a-half times the legal level when the crash occurred with 1717mg alcohol per 100ml blood. The sample also showed that she had traces of Benzoylecgonine (BZE – the compound found in the blood after taking cocaine) in her blood.
The court also heard that Pike had been charged with drink-driving on a previous occasion in 2014, and had received counsel from the police on the dangers of drink-driving in 2016.
Louisa’s father Sam Pike said “I can’t begin to comprehend life without her”, describing her as a “precious ray of sunshine” in his victim impact statement.
Ms Pikes defence counsel said she was “devastated by the loss of her daughter” and was seeking help for drug and alcohol abuse.
As he passed sentence, Judge Peter Johnson said: “This was entirely your fault though your grossly impaired state.
“Your actions caused the death of a bright, bubbly child who was adored by many.”
Following the drink-drive hearing, Dorset Police’s Sgt Phil Lea said: “Yet again we are here dealing with the tragic aftermath of a wholly unnecessary and completely avoidable event that has had devastating effects on all those involved.”
